The storyThe phantoms of time
Garments, especially denim, have a special gift of taking a life of its own by recording the life of the person who wears it.
This was created during my years in menswear and it was an exercise in patience and detail mapping. Using only pencil on multiple pieces of paper, a life-sized pair of denim was meticulously drawn out; every crease, weathered portion, frayed seam, hardware and stitch was crossed hatched by hand.
We composited all the parts and printed this onto a pair of plain cotton chinos, intentionally shifting the print off by a few centimeters. The resulting offset produced a striking optical illusion—a pair of trousers with the ghostly displaced memory of another garment.
Denim takes years of daily movement to absorb the unique marks, fades, and posture of its owner. This was not a shortcut to that but a new way to tell a different story: how we can think of the things that we love differently and by doing so, try to reshape the boundaries of design to create unexpected outcomes.
